South-South exchange activity: Biskra (Algeria) 26-30 September 2015

The south-south exchange activity was implemented in Biskra from 26 to 30 September 2015. The workshop, organized within the activity, aimed at exchanging experiences between Tunisian farmers from Medenine and Algerian farmers from Biskra on water management in agriculture (crop irrigation) based on participation and rationalization. 5 farms have been visited and fruitful exchanges among 13 farmers and 9 technicians were carried out. The farms have been selected taking into consideration the following aspects: the representativeness of the site in relation to the project issues, the site accessibility, the expertise of the farmer in the field of irrigation management, the ability of the farmer to accept technical innovations and his predisposition to receive groups of visitors. On September 30th, a final meeting was organized in order to discuss and exchange information and advises between researchers, farmers and technicians during which valuable feedbacks and ideas have been provided on irrigation techniques and agriculture management practices. The farmers noticed the benefits of the interaction between them and technicians for the sustainability of innovative irrigated systems. The exchanges resulted to be very useful for the adoption of water saving techniques and technological packages used for managing irrigation to conserve water resources and improve land productivity.  It was also the occasion to strengthen relations between farmers and relevant stakeholders and among stakeholders themselves (e.g. Institute Technique de Développement de l’Agronomie Saharienne (ITDAS - Algeria), Chambre de l’Agriculture de la Wilaya (CAW-Biskra - Algeria), Direction des Services Agricoles wilaya of Biskra - (DSA - Algeria), Regional Centre for Agricultural Development (CRDA - Tunisia).
